Crossing the line for sake of justice

I came across this on a very decent Israeli blog called +972 Magazine that Michael W, and occasional reader and commenter on this forum has brought to my attention few months ago.

This exemplifies the inadequate recognition of the beautiful human beings (in this case, Just and peace loving Jews and Jewish Israelis) who cross the line of tribalism and religious clannish tendencies to seek and support justice for everyone.

My deep respect and admiration to people of all faiths and ethnicity whose universal sense of justice makes the world worth living in.
Something caught my eye when looking through photos on The Atlantic of the Nakba day demonstrations which engulfed the West Banks and Israel’s border areas last Sunday.
Image 16, reprinted below, carries the following caption: Two Palestinian men struggle after being overcome by tear gas fired during clashes with the Israeli police on May 15, 2011 at Qalandiya checkpoint near Ramallah, West Bank. (Uriel Sinai/Getty Images)
Actually one of the men is an Israeli from Tel Aviv named Jonathan Pollak. I suppose The Atlantic was not aware that Israeli supporters joined the Nakba demonstrations throughout the West Bank on Sunday. Maybe the editors have not heard of the Israelis that have gone to jail or been injured resisting their country’s repression of unarmed Palestinian demonstrations. Perhaps they should have a look at the definitive account of the joint struggle and the new Israeli left which Noam Sheizaf and I wrote for the Nation in March 2011.
I think that the photo is much stronger seeing an Israeli and a Palestinian side by side suffering from Israeli tear gas…don’t you?

We have been very lucky in St. Louis to have many of those that cross those ethnic and religious lines, and dedicated their time, effort and money, and risked their lives in some cases to support causes alien to them, be it the Palestinian cause or the injustices against Muslims, Arabs, Blacks, Hispanic or any other minority in this area.
May God bless them all.

American victim of our Israeli Masters finally speaks out.

Emily Henochowicz is a Jewish American young woman who was in the occupied Palestinian Territory at the time the Israeli 'Defence' Forces slaughtered several Turkish civilians and one American  in the Gaza flotilla largest ship, Mavi Marmara.  In the protests that erupted in Ramallah the following day, that young art student lost her left eyes after a member of the Israeli 'Defence' Forces aimed his gas canister gun directly at unarmed demonstrators and, simply, pulled the trigger.

Emily Henochowicz
The Israeli Masters are usually accustomed to violently responding to Palestinians even when they are peacefully protesting. And if Israeli response leads to death of a little girl or an old man, or the maiming of scores of young Palestinians, that is still OK - safety of the masters is of utmost importance and takes priority over the lives and well being of an Arab or even many Arabs.

Violence by Israeli bullies against Arabs is not usually the bullies are held accountable for.  And if a soldier or an officer is unlucky enough to be taped while, for example, shooting an Arab who is a hand-cuffed and blind-folded at short range (Reuters Video), the worse that could happen is usually moving them to another 'Defence' unit where they can resume their 'offensive activities.  For the Israeli masters, good life must go on.

This time it was an American young woman - and a Jewish one -  that got injured.  She lost her left eye, and is lucky she is alive.  Yet, hell did not open loose for the Israeli cowards that feel they can abuse Arabs without fear of any accountability.

The fact that she is American did not make any difference.  The fact that she is Jewish, and that her father is an Israeli did not make much difference either. Our US government did not summon the Israeli ambassador, or issue an immediate strong denouncement of the violence against unarmed civilian American woman.  They usually save their convulsions for Iran as they did after Iran's government repression of protests by domestic opposition after the last Iranian elections.

I guess in the hierarchy, Israel trumps not only Arabs and their interest, but also Americans and their interests.  Some cowardly government and politicians we have.

Sadly,  it is not only the US government; the main stream media that did not pay any attention to one of their own citizens violently abused by a friendly government that we send aid to, and protect in all international venues at the expense of our own interest.  Yet we behave as if they are our masters.

Emily Henochowicz was interviewed recently by Amy Goodman on Democracy Now and it is worth watching.

Jewish boat to Gaza is sailing soon. Israel's murders may not be quickly forgotten this time

It has been a little over a week since Israel's bloody killing spree on the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara took place. At this point British, French, Italian, Russian and German officials have called for international probe (Check this: EU states competing over Israel policy). The UN is on board and already working on the probe team to be headed by former New Zealand prime minister.
[Addendum: The US State Department has just issued a statement endorsing international probe into the events as well.]

The good news is that Jewish activists all over the world are not letting go and are spearheading maintaining the pressure on Israel (and trying to influence the US as well). Ten thousand Israelis have demonstrated in protest of Israels aggression action and some even did that here in the US. Who knows, maybe the near-dead Israeli liberals and Israeli Left will be 'revivable'.

I received this email today from the group list of the Palestinian Solidarity Committee in St. Louis (which I strongly suggest to subscribe to to get updates on local pro-peace activism in St. Lois) . It made me very happy, and I wanted to share the news.
The Jewish boat [GazaFriends] to Gaza is sailing soon

In an undisclosed harbor in the Mediterranean, a small vessel is waiting for a special mission. She will be sailing to Gaza. In order to avoid sabotage, the exact date and name of the port of departure will be announced only shortly before her launch.

"Our purpose is to call an end to the siege of Gaza, to this illegal collective punishment of the whole civilian population. Our boat is small, so our donations can only be symbolic: we are taking school bags, filled with donations from German school children, musical instruments and art materials. For the medical services we are taking essential medicines and small medical equipment, and for the fishermen we are taking nets and tackle. We are liaising with the medical, educational and mental health services in Gaza.

''In attacking the Freedom Flotilla, Israel has once again demonstrated to the world a heinous brutality. But I know that there are very many Israelis who compassionately and bravely campaign for a just peace. As broadcasting journalists from mainstream television programs are accompanying our boat, Israel will have a great chance to show the world that there is another way, a way of courage not fear, a way of hope not hate'', says Edith Lutz, one of the organizers and passenger on the ''Jewish boat''.

The ''Jüdische Stimme'' (Jewish Voice for a Just Peace in the Near East), along with her friends of EJJP (European Jews for a Just Peace in the Near East) and Jews for Justice For Palestinians (UK) are sending a call to the leaders of the world to help Israel find her way back to reason, a sense of humanity and a life without fear. ''Jewish Voices'' expects the political leaders of Israel and the world to guarantee a safe passage for the small vessel to Gaza, thus helping to form a bridge towards peace.
The arrogance of the Israeli governments, and its well financed propaganda hasbara army in the US need to be met with outspoken opposition and activism. Please do not stand still and every bit of effort helps. Let us hope the momentum keeps building.

The St Louis Palestinian Solidarity Committee has a great web site for updates and resources. Please check it, and subscribe to their news letter.

Your effort, not only your sympathy is profoundly needed if things are to change for the better.

Israel: a morally bankrupt country

Day after day a new nail is hammered in the coffin of any claim that Israel has any shreds of morality or decency. For decades, their high powered propaganda machine and their real control on many major news outlets managed to blind the average Westerner about the truth in that unlucky part of the world that is 'blessed' with Israel's presence. Europe is almost free from the mental fog about Israel that the US is still clouded in. But even here, American Jews and non-Jews alike are getting to see the truth.

After all, how many times can a bully claim that beating and shooting a little unarmed kid is necessary because the kid is an existential threat to the bully?

In these sad times, only Turkey stands out as a symbol of dignity and pride (here and here). This gallery shows how much Turkey's posture is appreciated throughout the world.

Arab governments, not surprisingly, exhibit the usual lack of spine, lack of pride and even lack of simple dignity. Egypt miserly 'eased' its own blockade of Gaza (!!!) to allow crossing of Medical emergencies and students traveling to study outside Gaza, as if these cases should have been blockaded at any time. And even Algeria, thousands of miles away, was cowardly enough to ban demostration in support of the victims of the flotilla massacre.

The US wanders between wishy-washy stance by Obama and the State Department on the one hand, and the stupid comments by Biden on the other (See also Gaza flotilla raid:'So what's the big deal here?' asks Joe Biden ).

American media is busy with whatever the heck they keep themselves and the average American busy with. And until Jon Stewart says something about it on The Daily Show, most Americans probably would not have even noticed what is going on there. And after a few laughs, they would not even remember what he was talking about anyway.

Most European governments seem as if they are just tongue-tied, while their people are on the streets in front of Israeli embassies protesting. (See Norwegians ready to boycott Israel, and
Thousands protest flotilla deaths, clashes in Athens).

Nothing I say will make you feel different, and I am tired of shouting that Israel is an immoral regime because it is so obvious.

On the bright side, honest and righteous Jews everywhere seem to have the loudest voices critical of Israel in the media and in pro-Palestinian organizations all over the world. So I will only provide links to several article and videos that may be a source of comfort. All the links are from Israeli source, or by non-Israel Jewish authors and journalist. So, let us see some of their contributions:

And for many moving pictures from all over the world, check this gallery: Anti-Israel protests (The Guardian, UK). One of that galleries pictures truly embodies the new pro-Palestinian spirit in the world, and the immorality and brutality of the Israelis: American woman shedding blood for Palestine.

The 'blood letting' is courtesy of our Israeli allies at no cost to the American peace activist, other than her share of the 3 billion dollars of military aid we give Israel every year.

I know justice will come, and Israel as we know it will not last.

In the piles of hatred around us, glimpses of tolerance and friendship still show every now and then.

Richard Silverstein is probably one of the last Jews on the planet that should receive hate mail from a Muslim or an Arab. If you do not believe me, check his web site or his contribution to the British Guardian.

Of course he gets a lot of hate mail, but almost exclusively from right wing Jews or ardent pro-Israel fundamentalist Christian. Over the years, he stopped taking it personally. And with his political knowledge and religious background as a practicing Jew he knows how to handle that kind of hate.

Yesterday he got something of a rarit for him - hate mail from someone with an Arab Muslim name. The letter was profane, abusive and full of flawed logic, but above all spewed a tremendous amount of hatred. And rather than post the hateful letter as an example of how bad an Arab and a Muslim can be, he did not publish it but shared it with some of his Muslim friends, even suggesting that it may be form a radical anti-Arab who wanted to smear Arabs and Muslims by using a pseudonym.

Some of his eloquent Muslim friends wrote a beautiful reply to the stupid letter, and only then, Richard Silverstein was able to publish both: the ugly letter, followed by a most beautiful and eloquent reply from Jafar Siddiqqi, Richard's Muslim friend, to the angry hateful person.

Few hours later, I came across an article that puts an Israeli military Rabbi into awful (but well-deserved) light. This hateful 'man-of-God' was inciting Israeli troops to violate their own code of conduct, show disrespect for civilian safety, and was promoting the worst kind of racist violent attitudes toward Gaza Arabs during the last Israeli Massacre. This was an extreme example of Jewish radicalism using scripture and religious authority, encouraging young soldiers to commit unspeakable crimes.

While I know things like that exist, highlighting them carries the inherent risk of inciting equally hateful attitudes towards all Jews, not only those involved in a particular situation. I did not feel comfortable using that extreme example on my blog, and I communicated my feelings to Richard Silverstein. His response was almost instantaneous. He sat down, and wrote a scathingly critical posting about the horrible Rabbi and his hateful message, with the same eloquence and enthusiasm that his Muslim friend used in responding to the hateful Muslim Arab that insulted Silverstein and Jews in General.

I did not mention that as an example of a you-scratch-my-back-I-scratch-yours type of relationship, but rather as an example of friendship and mutual respect between smart, fair-minded and well-informed people of different faiths and political affiliation realizing that what is right is right, and what is wrong is wrong, regardless of who is the perpetrator and who is the victim.

Our Muslim community in St. Louis should remember that lesson very well. I this city, and soon after September 11, 2001 when Muslims and Muslim institutions and buildings were subject to threats by zealous brainless angry mob, Jewish and Christian interfaith partners of the Muslim community in St. Louis came to the Mosque on Weidmann road, to show support, and offer help protecting our mosque.

During the same difficult times, a Christian neighbor and a Jewish colleague of mine offered, independently, to take care of my children after school until the end of workday of myself and my wife's. My children were old enough to stay by themselves at home, but our friends felt that it may give us more peace of mind they took care of them while we were not at home. Our Christian neighbor also asked his son, who went to the same school with my older son, to keep an eye on my son during recess in case other students harass him in the school yard.

What I mentioned above is not just one or two feel-good examples. Behavior like that SHOULD be the norm expected from people who are civilized, honest and have faith of any kind.

Respecting, befriending and protecting people of other faith is not just a practical short-term tactic, it is not even just a long term strategy; it is simply what God mandates.
"As for such [of the unbelievers] as do not fight against you on account of [your] faith, and neither drive you forth from your homelands, God does not forbid you to show them kindness and to behave towards them with full equity: for, verily, God loves those who act equitably." (Chapter 60:8)
God was very clear in the Quran, that even though there would be conflicts with the people of the Book (Christians and Jew), it has to remain clear in the minds of Muslims that generalizing to all Jews and Christians is NOT the what He enjoins since He know that among them would be the righteous that deserve kindness and friendship.
"[But] they are not all alike: among the followers of earlier revelation there are upright people, who recite God's messages throughout the night, and prostrate themselves [before Him]. They believe in God and the Last Day, and enjoin the doing of what is right and forbid the doing of what is wrong, and vie with one another in doing good works: and these are among the righteous." (Chapter 3:113 & 114)
The nut cases on all sides are small in number, but they are loud, obnoxious and hateful to the rest of us no matter what our religion is. We need each other, moderates, from all faiths, or we, moderates, are doomed to extinction, or total submission.

A Jewish American woman's struggles to help Palestinians

This is the name of a great website that Anna Baltzer has. Till few days ago, I did not who she was, and I saw her for the first time last Sunday. This Jewish American young woman, and a Fulbright Scholar, was giving a talk on the empowerment of Palestinian women, and the horror that all Palestinians suffer just to go through one more day in the hell of the Israeli occupation. Their resilience is amazing, and their determination is unbelievable, and is matched only by their hospitality.

I did not need to hear this from Anna Baltzer to realize it. I have always imagined it has to be the truth. How else would it be possible to maintain an identity, and win the hearts of millions that did not even know that your people existed? To be able to fight for a national homeland in the face of brutal occupation of unbelievable public relations mastery, that is supported blindly by the USA, Palestinians must be very special people. And it sure feels good hearing it from someone with first hand experience in Palestine.

Palestinians, like any other people, are not angels or saints. Some of them are even terrorists. But most importantly, they are collectively a great people of wonderful qualities, history and culture.
This is exactly how one would feel about Palestinians after attending the great presentation she gave in the United Methodist Church on Ladue street in Chesterfield, Missouri, arranged by St. Louis peace activist and member of the Women in Black Mrs. Betsy Hamra. The love Anna Baltzer have for Palestinians, out of her love for peace and justice, show in every sentence she uttered. This is not love from a distance, or based on a fantasy novel she read. She has actually lived with them for periods of time, seen their suffering first hand, and even learned their language to be able to know them with nobody interpreting for her their emotions and thoughts.

She showed a huge collection of pictures depicting Palestinian lives with great commentary, and she has many more on her web site photo section. She concluded with an emotional song that i will ask her if I can post in the future (if there are no copyright issues) on my blog. Many Muslim, Jewish and Christian attendees lined up afterwards to express how they felt about her presentation.

On a Sunday that concluded a gloomy week for any media observer with interest in the Israeli Palestinian conflict, her presentation and how she was received by the United Baptist Church community re-energized me.
There is a lot of good people still around. They just need to be lot louder than the bad ones.

Parts of her presentation is available on Youtube, Here is a sample.
