On Anger - An 1100 year old medical advice

"Medicine of the Soul" is over a thousand year old book written in Arabic by Abu Bakr Al-Razi (born in AD 875 near Tehran), the greatest medical scientist and physician produced by the early Islamic civilization. He ventured in all aspects of medicine and psychiatry (including scientific medical research) and is known to be the first in the history of medicine to treat pediatrics as a distinct specialty, and not just medicine for people with small bodies.

Despite his great respect for Hippocrates, Galen and Aristotle, the three divine figures of medicine and philosophy in early Islam, he felt free to criticize and oppose their opinions (e.g., he wrote a book titled Doubts on Galen) if he felt he had adequate proof for his opinions. In his own words 'philosophy demand that you do not submit [intellectually] to your teachers, for that leads to stagnation of knowledge'.

Believe it or not, his criticism of the three learned ones earned him a lot of enemies in the academia of the Muslim world at that time, but could not cloud his influence as he continued to be a revered and reprinted author in medicine until the 18th century in northern Europe especially his book on infection diseases (You can read more about Al-Razi here).

As a medical professional myself, a message he wrote to a student of his leaving for a job in a distant royal court was unbelievably impressive in how modern it is. He was teaching his student (a budding new attending) not only the morals, and ethics of medical practice, but also on the psychology of 'VIP patients' and extended the scope of his advise to teach the student about life and politics in a royal court and how to handle it as a physician.

That lead me to another book of his called "Medicine of the Soul", an short treatise on psychology and psychiatry that also has the feel of a modern self-help and self-improvement book. I liked the the section on Anger very much that I decided to translate it and share it on the blog. I hope you would like the structure and the flow of logic, starting with the practical and mundane, culminating in a great sublime conclusion that has far reaching significance today as much as it had eleven centuries ago.

On conquering anger

Anger was created into the animal so it could revenge on other harmful creatures. That trait in excess, which leads to the loss of the control of reason, would inflict more harm on the angry creatures than on the ones that made them angry.

For that reason, the wise person should keep reminding themselves of situation of those whose anger lead them to bad outcomes, either immediate or late. Then they guide themselves to imagine those bad outcomes when they themselves are angry.

Many of those who get angry can end up punching, or butting heads, thus bringing pain onto themselves sometimes more that what they inflict on the other. So many times I have seen a man, throwing a punch against another’s jaw, suffer from broken fingers that may take months to heal, when the one that received the blow did not get nearly as much harm.

And I have seen those who get so angry and screaming that they started coughing up blood, resulting in breathing problems that may lead them to their death.

I also became aware of people who, in their times of extreme anger, excessively punished and harshly abused their family, children or their loved ones with what they regretted for a very long time. They may have even been unable to repair what they damaged in their lifetime.

Galen [a ancient Greek founder of medicine] has even mentioned that his own mother [getting angry if she is unable to unlock a door] would jump at the lock and start biting on it in anger.

And, by God, their does not seem to be much difference between the one who loses his mind and his poise in anger, and the one who is actually crazy.

And the more one remind themselves of these things when they are calm, the more likely they would remember it when they are getting angry.

As for those who have done such unpleasant things when they were angry, they need to be informed that anger got the best of them because they lost their reason, so that they train themselves not to act in times of anger except after contemplation and patience. That way they would not get afflicted, when they thought they were punishing another person. And that way, they would not share with beasts their nature of unrestrained behavior.

He who wants to punish others need to be free from four attributes at the time he inflicts punishment: free from pride and hatred towards the one they are punishing, and free from the opposites of those two attributes. If he has the pride and hatred, revenge and punishment will exceed the extent of the crime, and to have the opposite of those two, revenge and punishment will not measure up to the extent of the crime.

A wise person who educates himself about these thoughts, and trains his instincts to follow their guidance, will have their anger and revenge fairly meted, and will be safe from harming themselves, in soul and in body, soon after they get angry or much later.

These two old drawings are interesting if you just think how Al-Razi was perceived in the minds of of an artist, depending on cultural background of the artist.

Horror and mental anguish in a photo

This posting is not about how US 'dismay' at Israeli wrong-doing would ever straighten up anything, because it would not. The US can express dismay till the cow come home, and Israel would not even blink - they know it is the game of politics as usual.

This posting is truly to get you to put yourselves in the shoes the poor man in the photo.

Think for a second what may make you steal from you own brother, or kill the future of your own children?

Think what kind of mental torture would let you promote death of you own nation, or strangle what you and everyone around you have been dreaming of every moment of your lives.

Think what poverty would make you sell your soul to feed your children?

Think... what would make a praying Palestinian Muslim earn a living by building homes in an Israeli settlement on the land of capital of Palestine - his own homeland, the settlement designed to kill the nationhood of his fellow Muslim and Christian Palestinians?

I feel pity on the poor man - it is as if he is building the scaffold to hang his own flesh and blood.

As for those who created the situation we are witnessing: those who steal the land, strangle the people into despair, and take comfort in thinking that God sent them as light unto the nations. How would you describe them?

And do you really think they are shaking in their boots because the US expressed dismay at their deeds?

Religious leader of the Islamic Foundation of Greater St. Louis speaks on the Fort Hood massacre

Earlier today I was cc'd on an email exchange between several of the Interfaith Partnership (IFP) of St. Louis and Imam Minhajuddin, Imam (i.e., religious leader) of the Islamic Foundation of Greater St. Louis (IFGSL). The email was a reply from Imam Minhaj to an earlier message he received from the IFP and Faith Beyond Walls of St. Louis.

I found his reply to be worth sharing with you and the public, and he kindly granted my request to post his reply on this blog. It will be an excellent addition to the ongoing public discourse American Muslims are having with their non-Muslim fellow citizens about the the sad events that took the lives of 13 innocent victims (and injured over 3 dozen others) nearly on November 5, 2009 in Texas at the hands of Major Nidal Hassan, an American Muslim military psychiatrist currently indicted before military court for first degree murder of 13 victims of that massacre.

The message below is copied verbatim from the Imam's email, and I only trimmed the last section which listed quoted from Sheila Musaji's article listed at the end of the copied section. It referred to quotes of numerous American Muslim organizations about the events.

---------- Beginning of Quote from Imam Minhajuddin message.
Dear Cynthia Holmes, Batya Abramson Goldstein, and all our other interfaith partners,

Thank you so much for your kind and comforting words.

Indeed this is truly a trying time for Muslims in America and all over the world. First of all, our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims of this unspeakable tragedy. The light of their lives was snatched away in a moment of cruelty. We mourn with them and pray for peace and justice for them. May God be with them all.

Secondly, we, American Muslims, are just as horrified as anyone else by this, and all, senseless acts of violence against innocent people. We condemn these actions and pray for the victims of this madman who committed acts of treason against both God and our country. In my capacity as a Mufti and scholar of Islamic Law, I can confidently state that there is absolutely no basis whatsoever in our religion for such an unconscionable act of terror.

Even if the alleged facts may be true : that he was harassed and taunted by fellow soldiers for being Muslim; that being deployed to Iraq was his “worst nightmare”; that he tried very hard to get out of the Army but his requests to end his enlistment were repeatedly turned down; that he argued with other fellow soldiers about the legitimacy of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; nothing whatsoever can justify the murder of innocent unarmed fellow soldiers.
  • "Believers, never let the hatred of a people toward you move you to commit injustice" (Quran, Chapter 5, Verse 8),
  • "For not equal are the good deed and the evil deed. So repel their evil deeds with that which is best in the sight of God. Then, behold! The one who had enmity for you, and for whom you had enmity, may become a most intimate friend. Yet none shall attain this but those who are patient in suffering. And none shall attain this but one endowed with a magnificent share of goodness. But should there be any insinuation by Satan to instigate you to do otherwise, then seek refuge in God. Indeed, it is He who is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. (Quran 41:34-36)
  • “O ye who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to God, even as against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be (against) rich or poor: for God can best protect both. Follow not the lusts (of your hearts), lest ye swerve, and if ye distort (justice) or decline to do justice, verily God is well-acquainted with all that ye do.” [Quran, 4:35]
No true Muslim could ever commit such a crime against humanity. As Muslims, we are reminded that to take one innocent life in the sight of God is as if one has killed all of mankind.
  • "Whosoever kills an innocent human being, it shall be as if he has killed all mankind, and whosoever saves the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind." (Quran 5:32)
Muslims are also commanded to keep their oaths when given.
  • "O you who believe! Fulfill all contracts, treaties and covenants with God and with people." (Quran 5:1)
Thankfully, besides our friends from the interfaith partnership like yourselves, many amongst the political and military leadership of our country also understand this fact and can make the distinction between the teachings of Islam and the actions of a madman. In fact, many of them have expressed sympathy for the plight of Muslim Americans who have to survive this general backlash. Army commander Gen. George Casey has expressed concern over the impact that this act could have on the 2,000 Arab-Americans serving in the armed forces. He understands that not only do these Americans have the right to serve their country, but they can serve it in unique ways through their linguistic and cultural experiences as American Muslims. Criminalizing all for the crime of a deranged individual does our nation (and Muslims) a deep disservice.

However, unfortunately this is precisely what is happening at Ft. Hood and elsewhere in certain cases. Mikey Weinstein, a retired officer and activist for religious freedom in the military, forwards this communication from the wife of an American Muslim serving in the military:

“…I wanted to let you know what life has been like for myself, being an American-Muslim military spouse, over the last few days here at (name of military installation withheld), since the Ft. Hood incident. When I first learned of this, I was sitting in the PX food court with my best friend whose immediate reaction was, “ No offense to you, but Muslims shouldn’t even be allowed in the U.S. Army”. Wow, this was from my best friend here! I have heard this and similar sentiments repeatedly from various “friends”, as well as people insisting it’s really a terror plot.

Since this happening, my Muslim husband, who is deployed to Afghanistan, has been put on duty to build a chapel on his base, as well as being told not to associate with the Afghan nationals that work there. I went shopping at the commissary and had people mumbling under their breath but loud enough to ensure that I could hear, things like, “get out of our country”, “go back to your country”, “ F-ing Muslims”, “G-Damn Muslims,” and several other expletives you can insert there. Now people don’t just stare at you when they see you go by wearing hijab, they glare. Last time I checked, I was born in this country, this is my country, and my husband is serving it and continues to serve it despite the harassment and racism he encounters. He proudly serves despite the fact that our family pays a higher price for it than many others.”
(Quotations taken from theamericanmuslim.org)

I would highly recommend all of you to take some time out to read the following two very eloquently written articles by our own local Muslim journalist and founding editor of the online Journal, "The American Muslim", Sister Sheila Musaji. She has done exhaustive research and her works deserve recognition.

Saving Somalia is closer once women avoid using Bras!!!

Some fundamentalists are smart. Most are just plain dumb. Their knowledge of religion - whichever religion they exploit to express their anger and desire for power - is mostly spotty, and lack awareness of the breadth and diversity of opinions that all religions developed over time.

Most of the dumb fundamentalists think that they know exactly what God wants even though they do not even have first hand knowledge of their holy book- only the selected passages 'appropriately' translated from original languages, unspoken by most fanatics, and re-iterated ad nauseum and spoon fed to them in sermons and indoctrination classes by their manipulative leaders.

To me it is a blessing that most religious fanatics are stupid enough with no ability to prioritize, to plan strategies or even develop a sense of reality. Can you imagine the horror of facing an enemy with the fanaticism of Somali 'Shabaab' organization with the organizational smarts of AIPAC for example?

Even their smart leaders and scholars are sometimes so detached from reality that their ability to effectively guide their followers toward real world solutions becomes severely impaired.

I recall an interesting story, I heard from a source I totally trust, about a pious and very scholarly elder Muslim clergy whose comment after being informed about the scandal of Clinton and Monica Lewinsky was (and I am slightly paraphrasing): "Poor girl. That would ruin her chances of getting married."

While that may sound funny, it is truly sad because that clergy was the guide of many people to implementing and living their religion in a world that he knows very little about its inner workings.

A less funny story is told in this article by Alaa Al-Aswany, and renowned Egyptian writer, that I read in English on the British Independent website. I invite you to read the article from which I selected some paragraphs to present below:
Somalia is in the grip of famine and chaos but officials there are inspecting bras By: Alaa Al-Aswany

The Shabaab movement in Somalia controls large parts of the south and centre of the country, and because officials in this movement embrace the Wahabi ideology they have imposed their views on Somalis by force and have issued strict decrees banning films, plays, dancing at weddings, football matches and all forms of music, even the ring tones on mobile phones. Some days ago these extremists carried out a strange operation: they arrested a Somali woman and whipped her in public because she was wearing a bra. They announced clearly that wearing these bras was unIslamic because it is a form of fraud and deception.
......

In fact this excessive interest in covering up women's bodies is not confined to the extremists in Somalia. In Sudan the police examine women's clothing with extreme vigilance and arrest any woman who is wearing trousers. They force her to make a public apology for what she has done and then they whip her in public as an example to other women.
.....
Firstly, the extremist view of women is that they are only bodies and instruments for either legitimate pleasure or temptation, as well as factories for producing children. This view strips women of their human nature. Accusing the Somali woman of fraud and deception because she was wearing a bra is the same charge of commercial fraud which the law holds against a merchant who conceals the defects of his goods and make false claims about their qualities in order to sell them at a higher price.
......
The use of women's naked bodies to market commercial products in the West is merely another application of the idea that women are commodities. Anyone who visits the redlight district in Amsterdam can see for himself how wretched prostitutes, completely naked, are lined up behind glass windows so that passers-by can inspect their charms before agreeing on the price. Isn't that a modern-day slave market, where women's bodies are on sale to anyone willing to pay?
.....
Throughout human history, strictness towards women has usually been a way to conceal political abuses and real crimes. Somalia is a wretched country in the grip of famine and chaos but officials there are distracted from that by inspecting bras. The Sudanese regime is implicated in crimes of murder, torture and raping thousands of innocents in Darfur but that does not stop the regime from putting on trial a woman who insisted on wearing trousers. It is women rather than men who always pay the price for despotism, corruption and religious hypocrisy.
.....
What is really saddening is that the Wahabi extremism which is spreading throughout the world with oil money and which gives Muslims a bad image is as far as can be from the real teachings of Islam. Anyone who reads the history of Islam fairly has to be impressed by the high status it accords to women, because from the time of the Prophet Muhammad until the fall of Andalusia, Muslim women mixed with men, were educated, worked and traded, fought and had financial responsibilities separately from their fathers or husbands. They had the right to choose the husband they loved and the right to divorce if they wanted. Western civilisation gave women these rights many centuries after Islam. Finally, let me say that religious extremism is the other face of political despotism. We cannot get rid of the extremism before we end the despotism.Democracy is the solution.

Faith of the ancient -- أيمان العجائز

I have not posted anything for several months. Mostly as I see no value in it other than me venting, which was not my initial intention of starting this blog over 20 months ago.

Anyway, I received an email from a dear and thoughtful friend of mine who needed to vent after an email exchange with someone that forward him an email full of the usual nonsense: conspiracy theories about everything, and total denial of the most simple obvious truths in life as we know it. The most amazing usually in such email rants is the unrelenting sense of certainty and belief in thoughts that are the brain product of an 'intellectually below average' 5 year old.

My friend, in his email to me, expressed a wish that our clergy may be a bit smarter that those that circulate the mass emails. My friend is wishful that in their sermons and numerous teaching classes, they -- i.e., the clergy -- may help put some sense of reality in the minds of the paranoid defensive and ignorant individual 'mass email machines' who think they are using the internet to defend their own religion and ethnic groups.

I wanted to respond to my friend's email with a 2-liner: "The world is full of idiots, so do not waste your brain energy debating with them. Just mark emails from those persons and the likes of them as spam and move on."

But, being who I am, my email ended a longer then I intended, so I decided to post it on my blog- possibly just to vent as well.

The "ancients -- العجائز " mentioned in the title of the post is a term used in Arabic to refer to very old people that are waiting to die.
Not necessarily terminally ill, but their life seems to have come to being 'passing time awaiting death'.
Not in a depressed way, but as a matter of waiting for destined event to happen. One can only imagine how mentally placid and stagnant - yet peaceful - those people are.

Here is my email to my friend:
Salaam:

I am sorry you wasted your time responding to the those emails. I recently started a policy of marking as 'spam' the emails that come from people I know, who send nonsense most of the time. There are those who will NEVER send you anything but a mass forwarded nonsense that they may have not even read (not to mention thought about its content for a second or two). Mark those as spam and save yourself the headaches.

Most of 'Our' clergy - and I am using the word "our" loosely since they are definitely NOT mine - are no more informed, thoughtful, smart or less paranoid than those circulating those emails.

Still, I cannot help but envy people like those. They are certain of everything they know. They do not need to dig deeper or appraise anything to validate it. Their life is simple and they are comfortable they are collecting 'hasanat' (God's rewards) for every email they forward to 'enlighten' others.

Blessed are the idiots of the world!!!!

In the mean while, I am trying to drown myself in reading, especially about the early intellectual battles in Islam and some modern revival literature. There is a lot worth reading and a lot worth sharing but no venues, and no interest.

So, I have got to envy the 'mass forward email' people. Their life is a lot happier.

In the past I heard the following being attributed to Prophet, pbuh

اللهم ارزقني ايمانا كأيمان العجائز
which loosely translates as:
"O' Lord, bless me with faith (or belief) that the ancients have"
I am not sure if the prophet said it - actually it has been attributed to several other early Muslim scholars- but I see the wisdom in it: passive, submissive and totally non-critical faith or belief system is a blessing.

Although, knowing about our Prophet, I doubt he would have enjoyed that kind of non-challenging mental stagnation. If he said it, I would read it a his magnificent way of telling us what his own intellectual turmoils could have been.

I may dream of simple non-challenging life, but I do not think I would want it.

Talk about intellectual turmoil!!!!

Khaled
I am not sure my friend would feel any better after reading my email (I have not heard from him yet), but he vented and now I, too, have vented.

Let us carry on with life.

Khaled

Democracy for criminals, and criminal democracies

There is no dispute that the best system of governance mankind had invented is democracy. But democracy does not lead automatically to a benevolent civilized state that coexists in peace and harmony with its neighbors – even if the neighbors are also democratic states.

The claim that more democracies will lead to more peaceful and humane world is a lie, mostly used to justify horrendous policies with typical mundane and materialistic goals under the guise of spreading democracy.

Most of Europe was democratic when it colonized, enslaved and tortured its non-European subjects in Africa and Asia. France, Great Britain and Israel were democracies when they occupied Sinai and the Suez Canal in the 1956 war until the US forced them out. The US itself and the UK were democracies when they toppled Mossadaq's democratically elected government in Iran in 1953 out of desire to keep control over oil-rich Iran.

The US was a democracy when lynching of blacks was neither uncommon nor prosecuted. And when systematic discrimination against blacks was enshrined in everyday life by no less than the US supreme court itself in 1896 And it took the Supreme Court 'only' 50 more years to correct that mistake in 1954.

South Africa was a democracy for its criminal and racist white minority that claimed a divine right to control and enslave the natives of the land.

In modern days, Israel is probably the epitome of a democracy that unabashedly and systematically exercise policies a ‘civilized democracy’ should be ashamed of.

At present, Israel still occupies parts of three neighboring states, controls the lives of millions of Palestinians, and denies that the land it occupies in Syria and Palestine is actually occupied at all. It is a democracy that feels free to use other countries air space (Lebanon and Palestine) for routine air force activities, for threats or for exercise.

It is a democracy that feels unbound by any international rules when it wants to destroy a building here, or a suspected reactor there, or to kidnap and assassinate whomever it deems the threat de jour. No showing of evidence required, we just take Israel's word for it.

And if the rest of the world sees it otherwise, they are all anti-Semitic Israel-bashers. It also has democratic political structure, and security agencies that scream existential threats all the time and kowtows Israeli voters into living in a paranoid mind set that makes all the atrocities seem necessary for the state's survival.

The latest round of Israeli soldiers statements published tell a lot about what they were ordered to do while on a mission to destroy Gaza in January, and how their commanders and their rabbis set the scene for guilt-free destruction of property and life in the poor enclave. That speaks a lot to how evil a democracy can be and yet exploits the democracy claim to garner support for its immoral deeds.

The fight of Israel’s true moral minority against the a ‘democratic’ political system that brought to power fascists like Avigdor Lieberman and extortionists like Netanyahu is a difficult but admirable fight. The success of the such moral minority is unfortunately in doubt.

But setting the IDF or Israeli politicians morality aside (very few would trust them anyway) it is the Israeli justice system that gives the illustrative example today.

Few months ago, a pious Israeli citizen by the name of Ze'ev Braude [see photo above], an Osama bin Laden look-alike in appearance and in morality, felt that his religious annd zionist values obliged him to claim back a house from a Palestinian family – a house that Braude knows belong to his own people, on the land 'granted' to his people by God. And like any decent settler in under the Israeli democracy, he does not go any where without his rifle or machine gun.

An unenlightened Palestinian family could not possibly understand the historic and religious depth of the settler's commitment to fulfill the commands of his God by getting the impure ones out of the house and out of the land of Israel -- and a scuffle arose.

The good settler opened fire at close range at the enemies of God injuring 2 Palestinians, one of them was shot in the chest. After a very brief arrest, the representative of God on earth was freed from jail (!!!) to house arrest pending trial.

Just for your info, that settler assault was part of a larger scale rampage by settlers in Hebron against Palestinians, during which several other Palestinians where shot by settlers bullets. No news though about any arrest there either!!

Now the ordeal is over for the good patriotic citizen of Israel – really. Charges have been dropped and he is free and with clear conscience. Viva la Democracie.

And this is how that democracy works for its own people.

Haaretz, July 14 2009
The State Prosecution said Tuesday that it was dropping charges against a resident of Kiryat Arba who was caught on film shooting at two Palestinians in the West Bank last December.

The prosecution said it made the decision not to try Ze'ev Braude because such a move could expose classified information that might harm the security of the state.

Braude, 51, was filmed by the human rights group B'Tselem opening fire on the Palestinians at close range during the evacuation of a disputed house in Hebron. He was initially charged with intending to cause grievous bodily harm.

Following the indictment, Defense Minister Ehud Barak signed off on a document guaranteeing immunity concerning sources of information for the Shin Bet, its modus operandi and the units and personnel operating within the framework of the organization.

Braude's attorney Ariel Atari requested that the court instruct the State Prosecution to reveal the secret evidence in order to help Braude's defense.

The prosecution argued that revealing the information would harm state security and added that if obligated to reveal the information, it would drop the charges against Braude.
[... end of Haaretz report]
If your jaws did not drop by now, re-read the last paragraph.

That is why Israeli democracy is such great a wonderful thing [for Israelis only, of course].
A criminal is armed and lives on stolen land. He shoots 2 people of the real land owners and the crime is recorded on film. He cannot be convicted (despite the filming of the shooting and the material evidence of 2 injured people, and bullets in their bodies from his gun) without jeopardizing the state security. So, like any decent democracy, they let the fanatic criminal go free.

After all, it is not as if he shoot real human beings -- just 2 Palestinians.

The light sentences, if any, that Israelis (settlers and IDF personnel) receive after criminal assaults on Palestinians are not new. The justice system in that oasis of democracy is a multi-tier system: some get justice, others do not even count.

Israel will eventually go where apartheid South Africa and segregated America went. And it would not be the imaginary Iranian nukes or toy Hamas rockets that would do it.

What is founded on falsehoods and injustice shall never last.

Khaled
